Supreme Court issues notice to Centre, Election Commission to de-register political parties promising freebies before polls

The Supreme Court on Tuesday issued notice to the Centre and the Election Commission on a petition seeking direction to the Commission to seize the election symbol and de-register the political parties, which promise cash and other irrational freebies from public fund before election. The plea, filed by Advocate Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay, also sought a direction to the Central government to enact a law in this regard. The petitioner referred to a decision of the Samajwadi Party, which is a registered and recognised political party, to field alleged gangster Nahid Hasan from Uttar Pradesh’s Kairana Assembly seat for next month’s elections. Upadhyay claimed that Hasan filed his nomination, even as the party did not disclose about his criminal antecedents either on its website or through print or social media. Tushar Mehta gets second extension to remain Solicitor General for next 3 years

The Central government on Friday approved the re-appointment of Tushar Mehta as Solicitor General for India for a period of three years.  This is the second extension granted to Mehta by the Union of India. The Appointments Committee of the Union Cabinet further approved the re-appointment of  Vikramjit Banerjee, K.M. Nataraj, Balbir Singh, S.V. Raju, N. Venkataraman and Aishwarya Bhati as Additional Solicitors General (ASGs). Madhavi Diwan, Sanjay Jain and Jayant K. Sud will not continue as Additional Solicitors General. The Department of Personnel & Training Secretariat of the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet under the Union Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions further approved the re-appointment of Chetan Sharma as Additional Solicitor General of Delhi High Court. CJI Chandrachud unwell, will not take up any case today: Supreme Court notice

Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dhananjaya Chandrachud will not be able to take up any case in the Supreme Court today as he has fallen ill. This information was given in a statement issued by the Supreme Court, which said that since the CJI was not keeping well, he would not be able to take up the scheduled matters in the court on Friday. It further said that following this development, the Bench comprising the Chief Justice and Justice Manoj Misra in Court No.1 has been cancelled. The matters listed before this Bench have been adjourned, it added. The statement further said that Justice Manoj Misra will handle now hear the chamber matters alongside a Single-Judge Bench in Court no. 10. The matters to be taken up by Justice Misra along with a Single-Judge Bench include transfer petitions and other cases related to Chamber.
