The Supreme Court on Tuesday issued notice to the Centre and the Election Commission on a petition seeking direction to the Commission to seize the election symbol and de-register the political parties, which promise cash and other irrational freebies from public fund before election. Tushar Mehta gets second extension to remain Solicitor General for next 3 years

The Central government on Friday approved the re-appointment of Tushar Mehta as Solicitor General for India for a period of three years.  This is the second extension granted to Mehta by the Union of India. The Appointments Committee of the Union Cabinet further approved the re-appointment of  Vikramjit Banerjee, K.M. Nataraj, Balbir Singh, S.V. Raju, N. Venkataraman and Aishwarya Bhati as Additional Solicitors General (ASGs). Madhavi Diwan, Sanjay Jain and Jayant K. Sud will not continue as Additional Solicitors General. The Department of Personnel & Training Secretariat of the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet under the Union Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions further approved the re-appointment of Chetan Sharma as Additional Solicitor General of Delhi High Court. Supreme Court extends time for Maharashtra Speaker to decide on disqualification plea against NCP Ajit Pawar faction till Feb 15

The Supreme Court today extended the time for the Maharashtra Speaker Rahul Narwekar to decide the disqualification petitions lodged by the Sharad Pawar faction against the Ajit Pawar faction of the Nationalist Congress Party.  A bench of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Mishra agreed to extend the time till February 15, 2024.  Earlier on October 30, the apex court had directed the Maharashtra Speaker to decide as per the tenth schedule of the Constitution by January 31, 2024. Two days before the expiry of the deadline, the Speaker approached the top court seeking three weeks additional time.  Solicitor General Tushar Mehta stated that since the Speaker was occupied with deciding the disqualification petition filed over the Shiv Sena rift, he is not in a position to comply with the given timeline.
