Supreme Court agrees to hear pleas of Nawab Malik, Anil Deshmukh to vote in MLC polls

The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to take up the application filed by former Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh and Minority Minister Nawab Malik challenging the Bombay High Court order, which refused them permission for temporary release to cast their votes in the Maharashtra Legislative Council (MLC) elections, which are underway today.

The two-Judge Vacation Bench, headed by Justice C.T. Ravikumar, observed that in respect to the matters listed during the vacation, there is circular and the matter has to go before the Chief Justice of India.

“We’ll see if it can be taken up after 2:00 pm. Let us see,” the Court said.

Voting for the elections to 10 seats in the Maharashtra MLC began in the Legislature complex at 9 am and will end at 4 pm. The results are expected to be declared, either this evening, or by tomorrow morning.
