CJI Ramana to hear high-profile cases including Bilkis Bano, Pegasus today

The day before the current CJI NV Ramana would demit his office, the Supreme Court of India has decided to hear many high profile cases today.

The bench of CJI Ramana will hear some of these important cases. Few of the cases that he would hear are:

  1. Remission to convicts of Bilkis Bano case

The Plea challenges the decision of the Gujarat government for granting remission to 11 convicts of 2002 Gujarat Riots who gangraped Bilkis Bano and murdered her family members. The petitioners in the case are former philosophy professor and activist Roop Rekh Varma ,CPI(M) leader Subhasini Ali amd Journalist and filmmaker named Revati Laul. The bench that will look to the case comprises CJI NV Ramana and Justices Ajay Rastogi and Vikram Nath.

Cause title: Subhashini Ali v. State of Gujarat

2.Review petition in PMLA

On 27th July 2022, the Supreme Court upheld the validity of provisions of PMLA.The verdict made bail conditions in money laundering cases very stringent in the cases that court upheld. The case is about a review petition filed by Congress lawmaker Karti Chidambaram challenging the top court’ verdict.The petitioner in this case is Karti P Chidambaram.The bench that would look in to the case comprises of CJI NV Ramana, Justice Dinesh Maheshwari and Justice CT Ravikumar

Cause title: Karti P Chidambaram v. The Directorate of Enforcement.

3.Bail to Teesta Setalvad

The case is about a Bail plea filed by activist Teesta Setalvad about being arrested for allegedly fabricating documents in 2002 Godhra Riots case for framing high ranking officials including the Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi .The Court on August 22, had issued notice to consider the prayer for interim relief today.The petitioner in the case is Teesta Atul Setalvad. The bench to look the matter is Justices UU Lalit, S Ravindra Bhat, Sudhanshu Dhulia.

4.Pegasus Spyware case

The case is about slew of petitions that seek probe into allegations that Pegasus spyware which was created by an Israel company has been used by the Government of India to snoop several people including Indian journalists, activists, lawyers, officials, and a former Supreme Court judge by infecting their electronic devices like mobile phones. The petitioner in the case are Advocate ML Sharma,Director of Hindu Group of publications N Ram, Founder of Asianet Sashi Kumar,MP John Brittas of Rajya Sabha, Editors Guild of India, along with journalists Rupesh kumar Singh, Ipsa Shatakshi, Paranjoy Guha Thakurta, SNM Abidi and Prem Shankar Jha. The bench looking into the matter comprises of CJI NV Ramana, Justice Surya Kant and Justice Hima KohliThe Supreme Court had constituted a 3-member expert committee to probe the scandal.

Cause title: Manohar Lal Sharma v. Union of India.

5.Security Breach of PM Narendra Modi

 The case is that Lawyers Voice seeks a court-monitored probe into the alleged security breach during PM Narendra Modi’s Punjab visit on January 5.

The petitioner in the case are Lawyers Voice. The bench looking to the matter comprises of CJI NV Ramana, Justice Surya Kant and Justice Hima Kohli. The Court had, on January 12, appointed a Committee headed by retired Supreme Court judge Justice Indu Malhotra to probe the matter.
