The Karnataka High Court dismissed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by the petitioner praying to quash the communication dated 13.01.2023 forwarded by the Additional Chief Secretary to Government, Finance Department (Excise) to the Commissioner of Excise, Bengaluru. The Division Bench of Chief Justice Prasanna B. Varale and Justice M.G.S. Kamal on perusal of the said communication noted that a proposal is sought from the Commissioner of Excise on certain issue. “Admittedly, there is nothing on record to show that the Commissioner of Excise submitted his response to the Government or in turn, the Government has passed any order.” Thus, the petitioner has filed the petition on assumption that on receipt of the said communication, the Commissioner of Excise would submit a favourable proposal to the Government. The Supreme Court on Tuesday issued notice to the Centre and the Election Commission on a petition seeking direction to the Commission to seize the election symbol and de-register the political parties, which promise cash and other irrational freebies from public fund before election. The plea, filed by Advocate Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay, also sought a direction to the Central government to enact a law in this regard. The petitioner referred to a decision of the Samajwadi Party, which is a registered and recognised political party, to field alleged gangster Nahid Hasan from Uttar Pradesh’s Kairana Assembly seat for next month’s elections. The Central government on Friday approved the re-appointment of Tushar Mehta as Solicitor General for India for a period of three years. This is the second extension granted to Mehta by the Union of India. The Appointments Committee of the Union Cabinet further approved the re-appointment of Vikramjit Banerjee, K.M.
